Snowy Stunt

How cool is this pic? This is what we woke up to a few days after our last blast of snow and ice. We of course were slackers and left the shovel on the front steps and when I opened the door, ta-dah!! Like magic...
Travis engages his super-hero magic powers to cause shovel to remain upright even in the absence of human handling...Simply amazing, ladies and gentlemen (and he's all mine)!

Mr. Musicman Sighting

On Saturday, we went to a wedding of one of Travis's work buddies at the Waterview in Monroe and guess who the DJ was...Yes, Mr. Musicman. After he practically tackled Travis on our way in, we remembered that we had given the bride and groom his name. (psst, Amy, you may know her, or at least your brother may know her brother...) It was a nice wedding, very sweet:) We actually spent New Year's with these guys (minus mr. dj) being cheesy and playing games all night until Miss Bride invited us to her parents' house to break dishes in their basement for good luck in the new year. How could you turn an offer like that down? It made for a most memorable New Year's! They're a nice couple (and we sure need local friends;).

After the wedding we trekked up to visit Jill and her little guy. How cute he is! He's rolling around now to get from place to place and does this little swimming thing on his belly, arms straight out on both sides in the air and legs kick, kick, kicking, all the while with a big smile on his face thinking he's actually getting somewhere! Soon enough. He's just coming up to 7 months (and has 2 teeth already!) Next time I visit him, I'll put a disguise on him and take a picture that his mom will allow to be posted online so I can show him off!

Well, good for me that I didn't do any schoolwork tonight as planned. I was up very late last night and had planned on getting stuff done tonight, but I think I just needed to relax a bit. There will always be more "stuff" that needs doing. Deep breathe. Tomorrow's payday, yay! And the next day is Jeans Day, yay! And the next day is weekend, yay!

By the Way...

Lance Mackey DID win the Iditarod....in case anyone was wondering... I'll be mailing out the cutest Fan Mail letters to him from the kids in the class...They stay stuff like, "Dear Lance, I am your biggest fan!" and "I want to be a musher just like you when I grow up. Can you give me any tips on getting started?" So cute! "What kind of food should I be giving my dog?" I hope he writes back to them. That would be one of those memories that sticks with you...

Check Engine...Again!

Yup, so yesterday as I left my mentorship, my check engine light was on...again...I just had the car in a couple of weeks ago and spent lots of money trying to make him happy again, but I guess that just wasn't good enough...is it ever? So, car is in shop getting a new knock sensor...grrr...
In my effort to be independent in getting to work tomorrow, I told Trav on the ride home that I was going to try to drive his "spare" car to work tomorrow. The "try" being that it's manual and I just am not very confident or experienced with it...though I've driven Mike Brown's old truck (until it got stuck going up one of those steep Willimantic hills...I remember putting it in neutral and rolling all the way back down the hill to try again!) I also once was the "driver" of Michael P. whatever's car to the Halloween Haunted House at the old Macy's? in Hartford...So anyway, the point is that I CAN do it and have, BUT when you're carrying around such negative energy about doing it, it doesn't work. So when we got home, my practice run consisted of backing out of the driveway and into the middle of our road, stalling twice, revving the engine like a race car driver, and not having an ounce of desire or humility left to continue on. Poor me. I feel like such a schmuck not being able to drive a freakin' car (though Trav did say it would have been easier if I drove the porsche but I refuse to drive that embarassing vehicle...) I said in a huff on my way into the house something about probably having no problem driving a regular car, or even one that was engineered in the past 10 (maybe even 15) years...perhaps a nice sensible Honda? Boy was that a self-esteem killer...but don't worry because I came inside and prepared an anti-anxiety, relaxation blend of tea...I'm supposed to be playing with some of the Nervine herbs so it was a perfect application...the wine with dinner helped, too! I got a ride from a neighbor-teacher at my school in the morning, so all is well. The spare car will continue to be spare in the driveway tomorrow. Maybe when I have a better attitude I'll try again...stupid old car...

Pure Delight

Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby Ice-Cream...Deeelicious!!! I guess it's technically good for me since it is after all "All Natural" and I don't have to worry about my boobs getting too big either because they don't use that growth hormone in their cows. All natural yumminess and only 20 grams of fat (that is IF I actually ate the 1/2 cup serving...) Just the right treat after a nice jog with the girls after work today, dodging puddles...I'm so ready for spring now that I had my final snow fix!

I am a single lady tonight while Trav is in NY at a Nick's game with some high school friends. I am a woman on a mission (especially after my sugar surge kicks in) and ready to accomplish tasks---my own personal March Madness, if you will! Tonight's agenda is to finish my "Materia Medicas" for various herbs, while concurrently tasting some of them in their "infusion" (tea) form. The only problem is, these are the Nervines, which means they relax and calm the nervous system, and yes, even may promote/induce sleep...Sooooo, we'll see how productive I truly am...at least I'll have a good excuse to not be able to finish!

Uh-oh...am I hearing rain??? We so need a house that you don't have to go outside through the Bilco doors to get the the basement to do laundry...(and a fireplace, and a garage, and a little more room to move...hmmm...maybe we need Vicky's contractor in here if we're not going to move for awhile...) Enough procrastination...time to accomplish...

The Iditarod

In school, all the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders (aka the Intermediate Academy) has been doing a mini-unit on the Iditarod, The Last Great Race...

Of course I had my animal rights concerns at the thought of having dogs pull you through ice and snow over a 1,150 mile route in a matter of two weeks, more or less. But, I did my research and even contacted my friend in Alaska for the real scoop on these dogs and it felt okay for me to go ahead with the unit. Anyway, rather than boring you with those details I just need to say, Go, Lance Mackey!!! See, each class had to pick a musher and we made our whole hallway at school represent the trail and show all the "checkpoints" that the mushers have to stop at, rest if needed, sleep, get their dogs checked by vets, etc. Anyway, I picked one of the top 10 from last year, reluctantly, since I didn't know anything about the Iditarod and how I was going to use it to facilitate learning in the classroom. Well let me tell you how AWESOME this project has been! I'm just as bad as the kids checking in on http://www.iditarod.com/ to see what the latest standings are...Lance Mackey has been rockin' the house! It's all competitive and strategic now which makes me all anxious because Paul is right on his tail and they're in the home stretch...I just want my guy to win!!! Go Lance!! The other cool thing that we've done with this is that each of the kids in each class have also picked their own musher to follow and track the progress. They come in to school either asking what happened over night or else so eager to report what they already found out at home on the Internet. It's so great to see the kids so enthusiastic about something, especially to counterbalance the stress and annoyance of having to take the Connecticut Mastery Tests. Lance is expected to finish tonight!!!!...wish us luck...not to be mean to anyone else that might want to win or anything, but I just thing that Lance should be this years winner...

Funny Key Story

Just went to pick up a prescription at Brooks. Trav was with me. I drove. Went right back to the pharmacy, got the goods, went to get something in another aisle, got in line up front, paid, and was walking out the door while checking for my keys. No keys. Not in my pockets, not in my purse, not in my bag, not in the car. Car is locked. Go back inside, check the front counter, nope, the pharmacy counter, nope, the aisle we were in, nope. Walk outside again perplexed because they HAD to be SOMEWHERE. Next thing you know this woman comes from her car over to us and says, were you at the pharmacy? Yup. Are these your keys? Yup. She says she must have gone after me and just picked the keys that I left off the counter, paid, and when to her car when she realized they were not her keys...Thank goodness she didn't leave!! Phew!! I thought I was going nuts there for a minute!

Today was the first day of my mentorship with Mr. Nutrition. It was a highly cognitive day of hashing out the skeleton of a nutrition certificate program. Very interesting process. As it turns out, I don't think I want the nutrition guy to be my mentor, I'd much prefer the program director who invited me to join this process...We'll see what happens. Tomorrow is our second day together to get more of the "meat" of the program. It really is exciting to be part of the development of something new and potentially innovative. I'm so glad all of these pieces of my program are falling into place. I spent way too much time stressing about them.

Here's one tidbit of Mr. Nutrition's philosophy...Don't deny yourself Pleasure in life. If you deny yourself pleasure in life, then you will constantly be seeking pleasure in any way possible, including through abusing food. If you allow enough pleasure in your life, you will likely be able to better balance the pleasure in your food choices. Therefore the cake can be enjoyed rather than demonized. Interesting idea, no?

Re-update

Yeah, so two days ago, I spent a good chunk of time writing all about my living room and its piles of books representative of all of my various goings on at the moment...The aromatherapy pile, the herb pile, the "change your career, change your life" pile, and The Slow Down Diet single book that needed to be finished by this weekend because the author is our presenter at class. Anyhow, there was nice commentary along with the description of book-piles, but alas, the computer touchpad/mouse froze and even after a few firm bangs, it still didn't work. It almost got tossed out the window, but I'm already on the bad list this week at work so I didn't do that (it's a school-owned laptop).
So then, this here weekend is my much anticipated yet way to cognitively stimulating weekend. It was actually supposed to start today when I left school early to go to my mentorship in Coventry, but when I finally rushed out of school into the car, my Check Engine light stayed on. I of course turned off the car and restarted (I have such great technical skills...) that didn't work, so I drove toward the highway, figuring that once the car warmed up a bit, the light would go off. Pull over, car off, car on, still lit. So into Pep Boys I go after calling and leaving a message for Ms. Mentor (who probably thinks I'm just a slacker). Mr. Pep says $90 diagnostic but they might not be able to fix it...He actually recommended I take it to Subaru...thanks for being honest Mr. Pep;) So to Subaru I went, thinking to myself on the way that the reason this happened is because I really needed today to be able to relax a little at least before my next four days filled with class and 12 hour mentorship days with Mr. Author (mentioned above). So I'm taking this all in stride, feeling badly that I missed my mentorship since I was supposed to have my lotion lesson today and then take home ingredients to make more here instead of going up there next week...
So Mr. Subaru finds all these "faults" with my poor little car, who seems to have been feeling a little neglected and just needed some TLC. So we put some new parts in, fixed some other stuff, and $650 later, and 2 and a half hours in the dealership reading my aromatherapy book, and my little car was happy. It's a good thing because everything that was replaced/fixed was standard for having 75,000 miles and never done anything but the standard maintenance. She's almost paid off and I plan to drive her as long as I can!
Ms. Principal is not going to be happy with me because now I need to take another 1/2 day to try to get out to Coventry again...Oh well. This week I was late for school because of the early morning snow/traffic, left early (and She actually had to sub in my room), and worst of all, I had to take Monday off entirely for my mentorship which was a biiiigggg no no because it's CMT time....bad teacher. The final straw was that I completely missed a faculty meeting after school yesterday because my email reminder didn't get to me until today (not my fault, although I should have known anyway...)! So when I called in yesterday to say I was going to be needing to leave early, I should technically not have even been home yet (if I had been at the faculty meeting...) bad teacher!!!
So that's that. When you're busy and overcommitted, stuff will inevitably go wrong for the purpose of slowing you down. I recognize that, but hopefully I only just need to slow down today because I won't have time any other day!!! (Did I forget to tell you that when I Finally got to leave the Subaru place to come home I had to wait for the freakin' draw bridge to cross over the Housatonic!!! The thing is up in the air for 5 minutes, goes down, but the light just stayed red. Everyone waits in line patiently, bridge is down, but light is red...no one wants to chance it of course because God forbid the bridge goes up or breaks or whatever. I waited in that line for at least 20 minutes, like a dingbat (practicing my breathing like I've been brainwashed to do in times as this) until I realized I could just turn around and get on the highway to cross the same damn river!!! Isn't life funny?
